Carson Makes Cheltenham Move

Goalkeeper Trevor Carson has today completed his move to Whaddon Road and signed a two year contract.

The 26 year old becomes our fifth new signing of the season by manager Mark Yates, and he arrives as a free agent having left Bury over the summer when his contract expires.

He did spend the majority of last season on loan at Portsmouth though and he comes in following the departure of Scott Brown who has moved on to Aberdeen.

Speaking to the Official Site following his arrival at the club, Carson said.

'I'm obviously delighted. It's not nice being on the scrapheap and basically out of a job. It's the first time I have experienced it in ten years and it's a worry especially when you have a young family. Mark was the first manager I spoke to and he rang whilst I was on my honeymoon. People were telling me to perhaps wait but I felt good straight away because he was honest and up front with me, so I decided to go for it.'

Having began his career at Sunderland progressing through their youth ranks, he went on to gain league experience in loan spells with Chesterfield, Lincoln, Brentford, Bury, and Hull before the returning Bury for a second spell, wherein he was released by his parent club and went on to sign a permanent deal with them.

Having spent the majority of last season on loan with Portsmouth, making 40 appearances, his career record now reads 144 appearances and he'll be looking to significantly improve that during his stay with us.

Carson is also a former Northern Ireland B and U21 international, and whilst he's yet to be capped at full level, he was on their bench for the recent pre World Cup friendlies against Uruguay and Chile.

He has been handed the No 1 shirt ahead of the coming campaign.
