Manager Mark Yates has called on the team to be braver in every area of the pitch as we face Dagenham and Redbridge this weekend.
Despite the Wimbledon victory, Cheltenham again went down to a two nil defeat to Scunthorpe in our last game and Yates told the Official Site that he needs the team to be braver during games and he fully expects them to be so as he continues to demand higher standards from the squad.
'We have got to try and encourage the best out of them and try to make them keep believing in themselves and not be afraid of doing things. That's where we are right now, we need to be braver with the ball and better without out.'
Yates says that when teams are losing on a regular basis everything feels and seems far more complicated than it actually is, because self doubt creeps in and it stops players from reacting how they naturally would if they were high on confidence, so his job at the moment is to take us back to the basics, the simple things and the right things. It might not be the best to watch for fans admittedly, but it's the best and quickest way to get confidence back into the team so they will try things again and we all know when a player is high on confidence the most ridiculous things have a tendency to work on the pitch, and even if they don't audacious efforts can really get a reaction from the crowd which spurs on the players even more.
It's also important for Yates that the team start giving themselves a goal to hang onto in games to give them some belief, as chasing games is never a position you actually want to be in because more often than not, trying to get back into a match leaves you open at the back and you'll concede more - especially when things aren't going your way anyway.
As for James Wilson's international call up, Yates admits it doesn't mean it's an end to his time at the club, but he needs to speak to the chairman - see where we are, and then speak to his parent club if appropriate.
Otherwise we have a pretty full squad to chose from for the game, so Yates is hopeful of the right result.
