Yates - A Good Point But Work To Do

Yates - A Good Point But Work To Do

Mark Yates has said he was was pleased with the spirit of the players to fight back from behind in today's game against Portsmouth, but it still showed that we have a long way to go in terms of improvement.

Cheltenham had to come from behind twice in the game, with both goals coming from Jermaine McGlashan, latterly in the final minute of the match.

Speaking to the Official Site the manager was again left ruing our defensive frailties and whilst there were obvious positives from the game, he feels it should still be a lesson for the players that there is more than enough room for some serious improvement if we are serious about having another play off run again this season.

'We can't keep conceding goals like we do at the moment, but we've shown spirit to dig ourselves out of it and we're very disappointed not to have won the game in the end. We didn't really do enough to win the game, but goals are massive - they change games, they change mindsets.'

Yates adds that even though we aren't playing the free flowing football he'd like us to, he can't fault the players for effort but defensively switching off and errors are costing us way too much at the moment and giving us too much to do in games.

Five points from the opening six games and a goal difference of minus 6 is something that certainly needs to change if we hope to hit the heights of last season and having only kept one clean sheet so far in the league, it has to begin there so we give ourselves the chance to actually take three points without simply hoping to score more than the opposition does.

Yates also admits that the players are letting this hit their confidence levels and you can see them drop their heads in games, so he's called for them to be mentally strong enough to dig themselves out of this and fightback like they did today, and not let their heads drop at points which still happened in the game against Portsmouth, but thankfully not for as long because the attitude was right.
