Yates - Plenty Of Positives From The Game
Mark Yates has said he was disappointed to see us concede three in the game against Plymouth, but overall he thought there were positives to take from the penalty defeat.
With no extra time to be played, and the scores level at three all come the final whistle, the first round Johnstone's Paint Trophy game against Plymouth went straight to penalties and unfortunately Plymouth went on to win them 5-4.
However Mark Yates chose to look at the positives when speaking to the Official Site although he had to admit he was disappointed to see us concede the goals we did in normal time.
'We responded really well and our season has finally started. The Burton first half and the Crawley game were decent but apart from that we haven't been. The goals we have conceded have been poor and unacceptable, but we have played some good football at times and there were positives.'
Yates explains that the players are low given the result and the manner of the defeat as it came from a penalty shoot out but he feels they are proud of the way they fought back after going behind in the game, and he thinks their spirit will see them look back at the game as an unfortunate loss, but something they can take a lot of heart and belief from as on any other night he feels we'd have won.
He does add though that he knows he needs to get them working harder on the training pitch so we stop making the errors we did that led to them scoring, because we can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot and making life more difficult for us to get victories.
In terms of injuries and knocks, he also said that he thinks Steve Elliott and Matt Richards will be fine for the game on Saturday, and hopefully we can build further on that performance, cut out the errors, and get the three points and our second league victory of the season.
