Roberts Talks Extension

Connor Roberts has talked about why he re-signed at Cheltenham and explained the delay was about the chance of first team football at non league level.

Listening to the 20 year old talk, very few fans really could criticise his decision to seriously consider dropping into non league football in order to gain first team games and really kick start his career, but he admitted that the pull of League Football games, even as a back up played its part in his decision, along with some wise words from Scott Brown.

Speaking to the Official Site he explained.

'I'm definitely glad to get it sorted. It's taken a while and I was actually trying to get it sorted during the season so I could have a stress free summer! I'm surprised I have any hair left if I'm honest, but it's good to finally sign. Staying in the Football League was important for me. I had an offer from a part time club which would have been good because it would mean playing every week. Browny has been a big help and he's been like my Dad! He rang me loads of times during the summer and he has a been a big reason as to why I decided to stay.'

Roberts says that having talked with Brown so often, and him having laid out that younger goalkeepers need to bide their time, train hard, learn and impress, that he knows he's going to develop further at the club and there will come a point when he moves from being the back up to being the main man, but it's a process - however frustrating - that everybody goes through.

'It's tough sitting on the bench and that's why I was looking at moving, but Browny went through the same thing and I've decided to stay.'
