Northampton 1 Cheltenham 0

2nd May 2013

Sixfields

A first win for Northampton over Cheltenham in seven meetings was enough to give The Cobblers a narrow play off semi final first leg win at Sixfields on Thursday night.

Northampton, with 10 wins from the previous 11 home games, got off to the better start and has several chances to have taken the lead. Having failed to take those opportunities the lead was eventually taken just before the half hour when Roy O'Donovan (26) finished well.

Paul Benson could have levelled immediately, but his finish was disappointing with him then also denied soon after by Paul Nicholls' save.

Jermain McGlashan forced Nicholls into another save early in the second half, before The Cobblers threatened a second. Benson was again presented with another chance to level for the visitors when he headed wide when in a great position.

Had it not been for Cheltenham keeper Scott Brown, when he produced a fine save from Adebayo Akinfenwa, at the midway point of the half a two-nil lead would have been given to the home side who soon after were fortunate not to have seen a penalty given against them when Luke Guttridge seemed to foul McGlashan.

1-0 was enough for Northampton to take a lead into the weekends second leg, however given the wonderful home record that Cheltenham have and a disappointing away record that The Cobblers have this tie is far from over.
